I just joined facebook but for some reason dont know how to view any profiles... are all profiles private on facebook?

nope...they're network based; i.e. if you goto a college, you register using your student e-mail address and you can view most people in the network (who don't alter their privacy settings).  Also, if you know a bunch of people in a specific region, you can ultimately view the profiles as long as they aren't 'private' to the network.  Hope that helps.

That does help pretty big!  Do I have to have an email address from that school to enter the network?

kind of...there have been some loopholes where people have been able to access schools even though they have a .com address instead of .edu or, for example (this was a big one about a year ago), people who went to University of Missouri-Kansas City were able to access University of Missouri-Columbia pages for some strange reason.  It seems, it's still pretty easy to trick the system into thinking you're an alumnus or goto the university with a .com addy.

Anyone can join any network. A number of years ago it was different...you needed an e-mail associated with a school...but now you don't. And just to clarify...not all school emails are .edu emails...my school for example is xxxx@mcmaster.ca ...just so you know.
