How's the best way to go about this?

Sometimes I try to befriend friends of people in a work around way. Not people I know, but people I know of. Sometimes they add, sometimes they don't, but sometimes they ask if they know me. What's the best thing to say to get added? Something totally bland like, "we met a few a years ago, but we haven't seen each other since"

have you tried the "you showed on my 'friends you might know' so I added you. besides, I thought you're hot/cool/etc.
