Sign onto Facebook without showing up on the Instant Messenger?

Hi, guys! I could have sworn I saw something related to this topic somewhere around She-Geeks, but I've been looking all over and can't seem to find it!

Does anyone know how to sign onto Facebook without my friends seeing me? And I'd really like it if I could sign on the first time without anyone knowing, or having to change privacy settings while still being viewed in the meanwhile...

Any help will be appreciated! Thanks!

At the bottom of the Facebook homepage (or any subsequent facebook page), click the chat icon.  It will say 'you are online, go offline now', with a highlight on the go offline portion.  There is a trick to view who is online while being offline, as well, under facebook discussion thread (not the codes thread).  Here's the link: http://she-geeks.com/forum/facebook-discussionhelp/switching-in-between-old-facebook-and-the-new-facebook/msg6298/#msg6298
